'Yeonji' tells a story of 'love' that doesn't conform to market principles. It portrays a society striving to make humans machine-like and machines human-like. The narrative begins by questioning capitalism's role in shaping humanity and community. While capitalism excels at producing goods by converting everything into economic value, does it truly benefit the creation of human bonds?
The theme centers on 'romantic love' existing outside the capitalist framework. This love is uncontrollable, deeply personal, and detached from the social order of commodity exchange. It can't be precisely calculated or reduced to cost-effectiveness.
Choreographer Jung Hee-eun, who studies the human body, conceptualizes this work through instinctive, uncontrollable physical reactions. She focuses on the bodily responses when thinking of a loved one: the pounding heart, quickened breath, and flushing cheeks.
Building on this foundation, performers explores freedom through the movements and expressions of love. It draws upon individual sexuality, instinctive behaviors, and primal reactions in relationships. This work aims to unravel the constructs of female and male bodies, as well as those outside the binary. By doing so, this work investigates the mechanisms of pleasure and seeks to find means of liberation through the act of loving and expressing oneself.
